Petechiae are small, pinpoint red or purple spots on the skin that occur due to bleeding underneath. In the context of a newborn, the presence of petechiae can indicate hematologic dysfunction because it suggests problems with platelet function or clotting factors. Conditions such as thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) or coagulopathy, where the blood's ability to clot is impaired, can lead to petechial hemorrhages.

Jaundice can indicate liver dysfunction or hemolysis but is not exclusively a hematologic issue. Edema is often related to fluid imbalance or other systemic issues rather than directly indicating hematologic problems.
